HEALTH AND SAFETY
Each window-cleaning job is comprehensively reviewed prior to any work taking place and risk assessments and method statements are systematically produced. A typical risk assessment evaluation will address and action the following issues:
- Are windows cleaned higher than first floor?
- Can windows be left uncleaned if they are above 2 meters?
- Can the windows be cleaned safely from the inside thus avoiding any work at height (greater than 2 meters)?
- Can extendable poles be used to avoid working at height?
- If the windows cleaned are greater than 2 meters from the ground, are there adequate systems in place to ensure that persons employed do so in a safe way?
- Is staff employed to clean windows competent to do so?
- If they are your own staff, have they been given adequate training and guidance?
- Is there a risk of falling through glazed panels (even from inside the building)?
- If so, have the risks been considered and have any appropriate controls been put in place (e.g. safety glazing, safety films, guarding etc)?
The above-mentioned criteria is furthermore supported by a method statement, which prescribes the following guidelines:
- Plan the work route according to best course of action, i.e. time management and priority
- Put on gloves
- Display warning signs in the area, making sure all the signs are visible
- Assemble the required equipment and check for safety/competence, advise the line manager if equipment needs replacing
- Any solution required for glass cleaning must be prepared in a well-ventilated area, according to manufacturers instructions
- Using an appropriate cloth or spray applicator apply the cleaning solution
- Using a squeegee blade, wipe the glass surface, starting from the top and working downwards in a figure of eight (8) pattern. Use the extension pole for windows beyond reach. The squeegee blade should be wiped after each completed stroke or if it is lifted from the surface
- Use a scraper or non-abrasive pad to remove rubbish stains
- Wipe the window frames with the appropriate cloth
- After use, all equipped should be checked, cleaned, dried and returned to the storage area
